Sometimes a client relationship isn't worth saving. Here's how to end it professionally, protect your reputation, and get paid what you're owed.

- Chronic late payment: Multiple invoices 30+ days late, excuses every time
- Scope creep abuse: Constant "just one more thing" despite clear contract
- Disrespect: Yelling, unreasonable demands, personal attacks
- Misalignment: They want cheap, you want quality. Impossible to bridge
- Non-payment: They owe money and show no intention of paying
- Ethical issues: They ask you to do something illegal or unethical
- Energy drain: The stress of this client affects your other work

Hi [Client Name],
After careful consideration, I've decided that our working relationship isn't the best fit for either of us moving forward.
Here's what I'm proposing for a smooth transition:

โข I will hand over all files, documentation, and access credentials by [date]

- Hold deliverables until payment: "Final files will be transferred upon receipt of final payment."
- Pro-rated for work done: "I'm owed $X for work completed to date. Once paid, I'll hand over everything."
- Use the contract: Reference your contract's termination clause and payment terms
- Escrow if possible: For large amounts, suggest using an escrow service
โฐ Timing the Exit
- End of a milestone: Natural transition point, less awkward
- After deliverable: You've completed something, you have leverage
- Before starting new phase: Don't start work you won't finish
- NOT during a crisis: If they're in crisis mode, it looks bad. Wait 1 week.
- Give notice: 2 weeks is standard, 30 days for large projects

- Never badmouth publicly: Even if they deserve it. It reflects poorly on you.
- Document everything: Save all emails, contracts, and payment records
- Offer a replacement: "I can recommend 2 other freelancers who might be a better fit."
- Keep it about fit: "I don't think I'm the best fit for this project anymore" โ not "You're terrible."
- Finish strong: Deliver the final milestone with full effort. Your last impression is your lasting impression.
