Negotiation is a skill. Most freelancers avoid it, which means they leave money on the table. Here's how to negotiate like a pro.
You: "I understand budget is a concern. My rate reflects the value I deliver โ [specific result, e.g., 'the last client saw a 40% increase in conversions']. I'm happy to adjust the scope to fit your budget. For example, we could [reduce scope] for $[lower amount], or we could [add value] for the full rate. What works better for you?"
You: "That's great that you have options! My rate is higher because [specific reason โ e.g., 'I include 3 rounds of revisions, source files, and 30 days of support']. If $500 fits your budget better, that freelancer might be a good fit. If you want [specific value you provide], I'd love to work with you. What matters most to you โ price or [outcome]?"
You: "Absolutely! I'd love to help with that. The original scope covers [X]. This addition would be approximately [Y] hours at [Z] rate, totaling [amount]. Would you like me to add it as a separate line item, or would you prefer to schedule it for a Phase 2?"
You: "I appreciate that you want to maximize value! To deliver excellent work on [X], [Y], and [Z], I'd need to quote [amount] or extend the timeline to [longer time]. Which matters more to you โ keeping the budget at [original] or getting all three deliverables?"
You: "I require a 50% deposit to start work โ this is standard practice and protects both of us. It ensures I can dedicate time to your project and shows your commitment. The remaining 50% is due upon delivery. This structure has worked well for 50+ clients. Does that work for you?"
You: "I understand cash flow is important. My standard terms are Net 15, which is already generous. For Net 60, I'd need to add a [X]% fee to cover the extended timeline. Alternatively, if you can do Net 15, I'll include [bonus โ e.g., 'a free revision round']. Which option works better?"
You: "You're right, it might seem simple! What I've learned is that 'simple' projects often have hidden complexity โ [specific example, e.g., 'responsive design across 5 breakpoints', 'cross-browser testing', 'accessibility compliance']. My quote includes all of that so you don't have surprises later. Would you like me to break down exactly what's included?"
You: "I can make tomorrow work! Rush projects require me to reschedule other work, so there's a rush fee of [X]%. The total would be [amount]. If that's outside your budget, I can deliver by [realistic date] at the standard rate. Which works better for you?"
