Taxes are the #1 surprise for new freelancers. When you're employed, your employer handles withholding. When you're freelance, you're responsible for everything. Here's how to do it right.

As a freelancer, you're considered self-employed. This means:

โš ๏ธ Important: If you expect to owe $1,000+ in taxes, you MUST pay quarterly. Underpayment penalties apply.

๐Ÿ  Home Office Deduction

If you work from home, you can deduct a portion of your housing expenses.

Simplified method: $5 per square foot of office space (max 300 sq ft = $1,500)

Regular method: Calculate percentage of home used for business, apply to rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, repairs.

๐Ÿ’ก Example: Your home office is 150 sq ft in a 1,500 sq ft home (10%). Your annual rent is $18,000. Deduction: $1,800. Or use simplified: $5 ร— 150 = $750. Choose whichever is higher.

๐Ÿ“… Quarterly Tax Schedule

QuarterPeriodDue Date
Q1Jan 1 - Mar 31April 15
Q2Apr 1 - May 31June 15
Q3Jun 1 - Aug 31September 15
Q4Sep 1 - Dec 31January 15
โš ๏ธ Penalty: Underpayment of estimated tax by $1,000+ triggers penalties. Pay at least 100% of last year's tax liability (110% if income > $150K) to be safe.

๐Ÿงฎ How to Calculate Quarterly Payments

Method 1: Safe Harbor (Recommended)

Pay 100% of last year's tax liability (110% if AGI > $150K), divided by 4.

Example: You owed $12,000 last year. Pay $3,000 each quarter.

Method 2: Actual Income

Estimate current year's income each quarter and pay 25-30% of net profit.

Example: Q1 net profit = $15,000. Estimated tax = $15,000 ร— 30% = $4,500.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro tip: Set aside 25-30% of every payment you receive. Transfer it to a separate "tax" savings account immediately. When quarterly payments are due, the money is ready.
